Revised Programmes for 2011/12 academic year

The Department of Life Sciences offers a new curriculum structure to new and returning students for the 2011/2012 academic year. Life Sciences will now offer two BSc programmes, four single majors and three minors. The new BSc Programmes, Majors and Minors are available for selection by returning students who have completed Level 1 courses but who have not yet completed Level 2.

Biology with Education option has been revised and is still being offered as part of the Faculty programme (Option 3c).

Revised Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems: Assessment, Conservation & Management

The new structure of the programme is more integrated as it will share core courses with the M.Sc. in Integrated Urban and Rural Environmental Management (IUREM) and the M.Sc. in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management offered within the faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences. The proposed structuring programme will cover selected aspects of biodiversity associated with Jamaican aquatic and terrestrial environments, with a greater emphasis on their management, conservation and sustainable use.

The conversion from four to three-credit courses further facilitates the introduction of new topics. There are now six core courses (increased from four) and five courses in the Marine and Terrestrial specialisation (up from four). The Research project, which is a part of the MaTE specialisation is being offered as two possible courses of which a student will do one on the basis of level of performance in the first semester.
